Review of Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide
Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer’s Guide is about exactly what the title points out. It is about a guide to writing literary fiction stories. This book explains literary story's aspects which are character, point of view, dialogue, humor, conflict, desire, and emotions. Character is a very important part of literary writing, so the author must characterize their characters well in the story. Choosing between the third point of view, the second point of view, and the first point of view can be fatal and must be well-considered. The dialog is used to advance the story, develop characters, and add drama. But, dialogue is not for breaking up narrative passages, telling the author’s experience, and slow down story plot movement. Adding humor improves the quality of the story and makes the readers feel good. Adding conflict is not only essential to drama but also desire and emotions are essential.
William H. Coles explained this writer’s literary fiction guide very well. All ideas are well-informed and are equipped with examples of wrong, right, and good writings. So it enlightens me as a reader because I am not just reading pages of theories about good characterization, dialogue, conflict, and motivation without practicing it. Reading this book enables me to point out excellent characterization, the best point of view to use, how to serve a good dialogue, adding humor, how important it is to add conflict, desire, and emotions. This book is a very helpful guide for every amateur, beginner, or even advanced writer to polish out their literary writing.
Therefore, this book is a little boring to read. So, this is not a book that somebody could pick from its rack to entertain them with great stories or just to find something new to read. Instead, the readers of this book are already well-specified from the title: A Fiction Writer’s Guide.
Personally, I am an amateur writer that only writes for short stories competition or sometimes writes a story, then files it to wait for the competition. At each chapter of reading this book, I conjure up the short stories that I wrote. This book motivates me to open them up again and do some revisions to them. It also motivates me to write something new corresponding with this writer’s guide. I believe this is an excellent book that I have to follow to upgrade my writings. So, I rate this book three out of four stars.
In my sight, this book is a must to read by all readers, old or young, amateurs or advanced, to help them revise and upgrade their writing hobby or even profession. Since it contains everything that they need to write. From theories, examples, and a start-to-write guide.
