Heroes of Atlantis by Ryan Carriere is a story about an outsider called Roeg who doesn't belong to the clan. He had blue hair, and was a tall and skinny kid, he was considered bizarre by everyone else in the clan, seeing that they were short and muscular with red hair. When he was first found, he was holding a rune in his hands which he now carried on a string tied around his neck. Only Roeg could touch that rune without any repercussions and no one knew why. His clan life was difficult because he had a hard time adjusting to the rules and being a good hunter due to Krukk's constant criticism. He lived on the verge of being banished from the tribe, into the wild where he would perish.
The book was well edited and its beautiful illustrations made it easier to visualize the story, which is a bonus point for a book with mythical creatures such as dragons. For Sephonei, this has been a rather exciting change. She has gone from being a merchant’s daughter who lived a rather modest life to a rune hunter where she has to take orders from strange people she doesn’t know. After only 3 days in training, she’s sent out on the field now the only way she can survive is to learn how to collect dragon runes. The friendship between Sephonei and Ku-aya was maintained nicely. The theme of acceptance and responsibility was also well-developed.
Some words were unusual in their usage but they describe the period in the story. The tension builds throughout the story as the two main characters, Roeg and Sephonei, are bounced often enough to keep all of you interested in the whole thing. It leaves you wanting more once the book ends.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for the incredibly unique plot and the quick wit of the author. He used all the right methods in order to keep the audience engaged, the uniqueness of the book, how it had two main characters, unlike other books where authors randomly change perspectives, and the made-up names like “featherclaw”, which went with the theme of the book.
This book is perfect for people who love monsters, fantasy, and dragons. I would recommend this to Rick Riordan fans and JRR Tolkien fans. It's a great read for teenagers and young adults or for anyone who loves a never-ending series of adventures.
