[Following is a volunteer review of "Living Abroad: Challenging the Myths of Expat Life" by Jim Santos.]
LIVING ABROAD: CHALLENGING THE MYTHS OF EXPAT LIFE BY JIM SANTOS
Living Abroad: Challenging the myths of expat life is a book by Jim Santos. The non-fiction describes the author’s experiences, knowledge accumulated, and challenges faced while living in Ecuador, South America. Jim writes down an idea of what to expect and points on how to survive or live harmoniously in a foreign country. Jim is accompanied by his wife, Rita, on this journey. He briefly discusses his reasons for moving, how he did it and how his first few months were like living as a foreigner together with his wife.
I assume everything written in this book to be true therefore it gives a somewhat realistic picture to the reader of what it is like to be an alien. The book has 151 written pages so it will not be exhausting to finish reading it. It also has funny stories to keep the reader entertained which is what I mostly like about it. Jim gives refences of places that he thinks are amazing and one should visit when you are in South America, which is helpful.
The author has not travelled a lot so the information in this book may not apply to some places. It is not a reliable source but can be used for additional information. Some of the stories in the book can be triggering or disturbing so you should have an open mind while reading this book.
I give this book a two out of four because the author mainly talks about Ecuador and its neighboring cities and villages. It is therefore not safe to rely on just this one book as it does not cover other different places with different settings, ethnicity, culture and so on. Readers will have to look at other sources for more information.
Anybody can read this book for fun or to increase their knowledge, it is especially good for people who travel abroad a lot and those who are considering living outside their current location. I strongly recommend it for the 2 kinds of people I mentioned last.
