Broken Inn written by A.W. Baldwin tells the story of a girl, named Hailey, who is trying to cope with the grief of losing her mother. Little does Hailey know, her life is about to change and force her to embrace her journalist spirit and the skills that come along with it. Young Hailey finds a very helpful, yet usual friend who always seems to be there when she needs a hand. Hailey and her new friends uncover the secrets of a broken-down hotel and bring justice to the light. While unraveling this mystery Hailey finds herself slipping away from the grief she let nearly consume her.

One of the positive aspects of this book is the straightforward storyline with no twists. The reader can read straight through the book without stopping to figure out the underlying mystery. Additionally, the descriptions of the landscape are very well written and provide a charming picture. Not only that, there is a map, in the beginning, to assist the reader in understanding where the characters are and where they are headed.

There are many negative aspects found throughout the book. The first being the extreme volume of very short chapters that split the information up inconveniently. This constant break-up of the information is frustrating for those who enjoy a smooth-flowing story. Another issue is that the main antagonist is obvious, which takes the mystery out of the story. In many wonderful books, the villain is complicated and often makes the reader need to think about morels and who the real villain will be. Additionally, the characters are bland and lackluster with no in-depth backgrounds, arcs, or even emotional drama. These characters do not allow the reader to get emotionally involved so the story becomes stale. The uninteresting characters mixed with an unstimulating and uninspiring storyline makes reading this book a chore.

I rate this book 1 out of 4 stars. I give this rating due to the stagnant characters and storyline. This book should not be listed as a mystery or suspense novel. The story presents itself as a list of events, giving all information, sparking no curiosity.

I would not recommend this book to anyone looking to read a murder mystery, it is a waste of time in that category. Readers who do not care for complex characters or storylines may enjoy this. Overall, this book seemed like it had great potential, but left me hanging grasping for a real mystery.
