Review of Korian
The Manian's Spear, Book 1 of the series Korian by Giorgio Garofalo is a dark fantasy book. It includes sorcery, magic objects, monsters, swordplay, and battles. The events happen in Endura, another planet similar to Earth, but full of magic and mystery. There humans and ruids (firstlings), an indigenous humanoid race, lived peacefully for many hundreds of years. Then they became exposed to an ancient evil. Humans and firstling started to disappear, and then returned as stragoy, violent undead corpses. Stragoy are controlled by an evil person, who has dark powers and wants to conquer all the Endura, killing and enslaving all the people.
Doric, Will, and Korian are heroes, destined to play their role in saving Endura. They have some magical gifts and strong characters. These heroes need to overcome a lot of difficulties and face many dangers on their way, because the fate of Endura depends on them.
This book is full of action, intrigue, and mystery. The story always moves at a decent pace and remains interesting. The main heroes: Doric, Will, and Korian live separately in different places, grow up, and encounter their own adventures. However, their fate is linked, as they all work to destroy the evil. All the heroes finally meet at the end of the book, as all the events of the book lead to one direction.
Korian is the most interesting hero of the book, in my opinion. He has unique gifts, and a lot of mystery surrounds him. His adventures in the desert and interactions with magical objects are quite exciting.
Though all the events of the book serve to move the story forward, I think that the characters of the heroes were underdeveloped. The author did not include enough dialogs, which might show the reader the inner world of the heroes and how they think. Also, some dialogs seem a little flat, lacking a unique spark. I consider it to be a negative point of the book, because it is important for an author to create vivid characters, so that the reader could relate to them.
I also think that the author could develop more love relations of the heroes in the book. There are several love lines, but the author just scratched the surface, describing them.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars, because it is a very interesting book. Though, I think that the author could develop the characters of the heroes more thoroughly.
I think that a person who is fond of dark fantasy novels, especially a fan of The Lord of the Rings, would enjoy this book. Though, I do not recommend it for children, because there are a lot of violent scenes in this book.
