Time travel is always an interesting topic. It can be addressed from the sci-fi point of view to the philosophical one. The Watchmaker’s Doctor by G.M.T. Shuilling is more focused on the latter since it poses the question: If you could change one decision in your life, what would it be? Would you live again if you had the chance?

Greg is a former watchmaker full of wisdom living in a retirement home. His doctor, Anaya, is a woman in her thirties trying to help others through medicine while struggling with her own life. One day Greg gives his most dear creation to Anaya: his own watch. This watch has the power to turn back time and, soon after a tragedy, Anaya has to decide quickly where to go back in her life to live it again.

When Anaya goes back to her last high school years, she doesn’t remember what had happened the first time she lived until something triggers those memories. This way, we discover with Anaya the events that marked her past life, the traumas and decisions that she did not realize were that important when she experienced them the first time. What I liked the most in this book was how real the protagonist is. She is not perfect and has committed a lot of mistakes. Also, I think it is worth mentioning that Anaya has bipolar disorder. Not many books have protagonists struggling with mental health issues and this one brings the topic to the table.

Shuilling has the ability to keep the reader gripped with a fast-paced plot, complete characters, and relatable situations. I felt connected with Anaya, accompanying her in her travel of becoming a new person. This time with her feet on the ground, and decided to make things better.

I rate this book with 4 out of 4 stars. I cannot think of one thing that I disliked. After reading it, I kept thinking if there is something in my life that I would like to change, and how sometimes we take for granted so many things in our lives. Besides the story, the editing of the book was done perfectly. I didn’t find any mistakes.

The book ends with a plot twist. I would love to know what will happen next in Anaya’s life, but I think it can be read as if it was only one book. The dilemmas, questions, and situations presented in The Watchmaker’s Doctor will be interesting to reflect on for young adult and adult audiences.
