Review of The Fox
The fox is a historical fiction novel of four parts based on ancient Greek history written by M.N.J.Butler.
The story begins as Leotychides, son of agis II, Eurypontid king of Spartan, dictates his story and the story of Spartan to a scribe in Macedonia. Leo, as he is fondly called, is the main character of this story. He talks of his childhood in the palace and the flock, growing and learning from rhodibas to eiren with his loyal friends and flock brothers. He narrates his time and experience as a proud soldier in the Spartan army; the overwhelming battles, the wins and loses. Then the unfortunate events that led to his present situation in a foreign country. All the while, giving a description of the wars and the political matters concerning Spartan within herself and with other Greek city states at the different stages of his life.
Honestly, I loved the book. I am interested in Greek mythology and culture so naturally, I was inclined to pick a historical fiction based on ancient Greek. In my opinion, M.N.J.Butler skillfully interwove Leotychides' story and the story of the peloponnesian war into one. I have little interest in politics of any kind but the way he merged the story and the political matters made me enjoy the book and I found myself becoming more interested in the politics of the Greek cities. I also enjoyed reading about Leo's life. His relationship with his family and friends made me happy. It truly warmed my heart to watch the bond of friendship between him and his flock brothers grow till adulthood. Leo's character was brought to life in my heart and I began to share his love for laws of Lykourgos, Lakedaimon and the Spartan people. In the times of Leo's sorrow and anger, I understood his fox. I admired and respected the culture and laws of the Spartan people.
I didn't particular dislike anything about the book. Although there were times that some events of the war were confusing but that was on few occasions. Some quotes in the novel had missing quotation marks at the beginning of the sentence though.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The author properly described the setting of ancient Greek. He adequately described characters using their actions and responses. Leo's story was very interesting to read and the conflicts and politics concerning Spartan and other Greek states was well narrated.
I recommend this book for lovers of ancient Greek history, culture and politics. Lovers of any kind of politics can also read this book.
