Review of Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide
Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer’s Guide is a guide for writers aiming to improve on the area of writing in the fiction genre. The author, William H. Coles, splits the book into two sections. In the first section, the author shares tips on creating characters and how they influence different aspects of a story, narration skills, writing good dialogues and the purposes of dialogues, descriptive in-scene writing, writing from different points of view, and mastering other aspects of literary fiction writing such as time, emotions, plot, conflict, and humor. In the second part, the author shares how to create a successful literary fiction story that can attract and entertain readers.
The author does a good job at clearly defining each important word that will be used in each chapter so readers understand clearly when reading further down the line. Apart from giving tips on what and how to write in different aspects, I really liked it when the author also shares how these actions will take your literary fiction stories to the next level. The author also does a good job at consistently mentioning simplified and clear rules and guidelines which can help beginner writers to follow these skills and apply them better.
Throughout the story, the author has included many quotes of famous and classical literary fiction stories and has broken them down to explain what made them successful. These examples can allow readers to understand quicker and to a better level in terms of what the author is trying to explain. The author also does a good job at discussing the good and bad things of each writing point of view which allows readers to choose wisely when to use each writing point of view (1st, 2nd, and 3rd person). Practical tips aside, I also enjoyed when the author shared the mindset of a good author and what makes their stories successful. On the other hand, the author also shares why stories fail, which can be a valuable insight to many writers.
Even though the content delivered was excellent, there were a few grammatical errors and typos which is really bad considering this is a guide related to the English language. This was the only aspect of the book that I disliked as the other aspects were well done by the author.
Overall, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. This is due to the very in-depth and eye-opening analysis of quoted famous literary fiction stories that would help aspiring writers in many ways. The content delivered was very helpful and practical as I believed that it improved my own literary fiction writing skills and I am confident that it will help other writers too.
This book is recommended for anyone that is currently or planning to study the English language or literature. It is also recommended to all authors as it will expand their skill set in terms of literary fiction writing.
