Mixed blessings by J.M. Muse is a fictional novel that is set in present-day Los Angeles exploring racial wars. Racism has been valid over the years to years. The color difference between white people and people of other colors has been at the vanguard of political dynamics more so in the USA.

The main characters Kimberly Solberg and minister Kublai Khan are introduced to us. Kimberly who is also known as Kim is a product of mixed race who now has to suffer due to her skin color. She is bullied by her schoolmates and suffers from an identity crisis. Let's journey with Kim, a young girl who is after being accepted and finding true happiness and love. We meet Minister Kublai, the head pastor of the house of Jeremiah temple and a man known to be devoted to God who is set on his mission to end racism and discrimination. With the support of very strongholds, like Hung Suk, he wants every child born by a black father to be identified as black. Will his mission succeed? Not until you discover his method to accomplish his mission thinking that a time will come where the black will rule over the whites.

The book primarily analyzes the theme of racism and how it's intertwined with religious entities. I can't leave out the suspense that kept me glued through the book as I wanted to know whether Khan's mission was successful. However, you'll come across many racial slurs, and among them is Pastor Tucker Dalton who's church was chiefly for the whites stands against pastor Khan's mission. He is displeased by his plans and comes up with Christian soldiers to stop what had been started. Who will suffer in the course between the two pastors?

I enjoyed how the author induced themes of love, rivalry, government, and racism. I also adored some characters in the book like Kim and Michael Kublai. Pastor Kublai Khan seems to be a man of his principles in politics and religion and I could picture him trying to achieve his mission. I also liked how the author brings in the perspective of both races and concentrates on their similarities with the urge to curb racism and not being biased in any way. I would say the characters were well-developed as you would feel what they were experiencing.

At first, the pace of the book was so slow and so uninteresting to the degree of not understanding what was going on. Also, I felt to some extent it was too shallow, the author didn't give more details to some scenes and characters. For instance, as far as I liked Kim, I didn't get her picture or know how she was. The scene of Ty and Star having an affair was not in detail in that we don't know how it ended. Did Maria-Ann know about them? Some questions couldn't be resolved.

Without any doubt, the book was professionally edited since I didn't come across any grammatical errors or typos. I found the book being educative since racism is still experienced up to date, though not personally but I felt it was handled well, the creativity of the author also being portrayed.

I give this book a perfect rating of four out of four stars because of the writer's plotline which is very intact and sound. Again, a real-life problem is highlighted which needs to be resolved. I would recommend this piece to those eager to know about racism or affected since it's educative. There are explicit sexual scenes and the presence of profane language which I wouldn't advise to children.
