Review of Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?
When people think and describe addicts, they refer to street junkies, homeless people, and people who lack morality. But actually, addicts are normal people who have a family, a permanent job, and they are even good people. People become addicts because they feel high after consuming alcohol and drugs. This high is not a dopey feeling, a calming feeling, or being sedated. The real high is a euphoric experience, extreme happiness that sends people into full alertness, and a feeling of being very well-energized. Each drug works differently from one body to another. Some people feel sedated, but others experience euphoria. It depends on their genes because each drug brings its own genetic target. This euphoria hooks someone into continuing chasing drugs to always be in that very happy state. There is a difference between abusing and addicting drugs. Abusing comes from stress and pressure. When both are gone, they will highly likely stop using drugs. But addiction comes when somebody feels incredibly happy using it, so they chase that happiness over and over again.
This book is very great. It explains the real addiction and gene susceptible in each chapter over and over again but then combines it with some other topics on addiction such as alcohol addiction, drug addiction, Alcohol Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous organizations, relapsing, pain management, pain pill addiction, and examples of real people's experiences under Kyle Oh's care. It gives a complete view of addiction, and it is important to know about the real addiction. Everything is explained in understandable words, and there is a short handout to share without sharing the whole book with copyright. Not to mention, this book is free of error.
Therefore, the title of the book, Why Can’t Johnny Just Quit?, is less alluring. I wouldn’t understand that the book is about addiction if I didn’t read the summary. Instead, I would think about what is wrong with this Johnny.
I feel grateful that I’ve read this book. It gives me a very early warning about addiction, although I am not consuming alcohol or drugs. I think it is important for me to know about this addiction concept and I will tell everyone I know about this. Also, I think this book will be a life-changer for some others. This book gets me to ask my parents if any of the family members have a history of alcohol and drug addiction. This information prevents me and my future children from getting addicted even before we taste alcohol and drugs. With all of my considerations, I rate this book three out of four stars.
Every patient under rehabilitation care, their family, every soul out there that is looking for a way out of drug slavery, and every youth need to read this book. This book is a complete guide for patients, people with addiction that is not under rehabilitation care, and their family. But this book is also a prevention tool for young people, even before they try alcohol and drugs.
