Cyberwar and romance have never really been able to mix well together. Usually, one ends up taking precedence over the other. In Cynthia and Dan: Cyber War by Dorothy May Mercer, Cynthia finds herself trying to balance the two.

Cynthia, head of security for a government official, has been with Dan for years. But unfortunately, those years have not created the romance that she desires. However, all of that can change for her when she meets Sky Eastman. Even though he is a man of mystery, he also might be the man to spark the romance Cynthia has been waiting for. Each chapter focused on romance keeps you wanting more. But for Cynthia, trust does not come easy, and she finds herself battling between what she feels and the information at hand.

I would rate this novel three out of four stars. May mercer does a great job at developing a swoon-worthy romance and a cyberwar that keeps you on your toes. However, I would not give this book a full four stars because as the story unfolds, the book starts to spend less time developing the romance and much longer on the cyberwar. This imbalance makes the romance feel rushed, making it less realistic. More detail is then put into the cyberwar. While the cyberwar story is good, it becomes lengthy with unnecessary dialogue and ultimately drags out the story.

I would not rate this novel any less than three stars because it has what I believe to be a fantastic surprise that I could not see coming. While the romance was cut short throughout the story, the ending gave the reader something to cheer about. I believe that the story would have benefited from being longer overall. This way, both the cyberwar and romance could have had time to develop. The author also does a great job developing characters and a work environment that many people can relate to.

This novel is for someone who enjoys romance and the back end of politics. However, I would not recommend this read to someone looking for a detailed romance story because the romance in this novel is kept very brief. There are a few mildly explicit scenes in the book. However, these sections are labeled from start to finished and can be skipped over if desired. This novel also talks about terrorism and how terrorists communicate through technology. Therefore I would not recommend this novel to anyone who doesn't have any interest in reading about terrorists.
