Review of Wellness Toolbox
In a world where there is so much information and miracle claims in regards to personal health, how can we differentiate between facts and myths? Don Roberts, a fitness and nutrition specialist answers this in his book, Wellness Toolbox: Debunking Myths About Fitness and Nutrition to Provide All the Tools You Need for a Healthier and Happier Life. In his book, he takes the most popular fitness and nutrition beliefs to help readers identify what advice is true and what to ignore.
Don Roberts has been a fitness trainer and nutritional coach for over 20 years and owns a gym of his own. The book is divided into four parts, in which the author shares his knowledge on fitness, nutrition, shares client testimonies and his personal journey to achieve good health. He begins by taking readers through his teenage years and discusses the experiences that led to his passion for fitness as a way of life. Don Roberts does not offer a quick fix, but instead, he shows readers that with a bit of dedication, anyone can easily incorporate fitness into their daily lives, and change it for the better.
What I liked most about this book is how the author was able to analyse and simplify all the research data into an easy to digest guide for the average reader. Additionally, he included references to the studies he mentioned and provided other book suggestions for further reading. It shows that his work is indeed well-researched and that he is open to expanding his knowledge by learning from others, despite having decades of experience. I find this to be an honourable trait that further reinforces my trust in the information from his book. The author also used comical illustrations in certain chapters to drive his point across, which was both entertaining and effective at helping me understand more complex facts. Through this reading experience, I was able to identify mistakes in my own health regime. For example, I had initially assumed cardio is better than strength training for weight loss which is not true at all. Not only does the author explain why something is a myth, but he also provides a solution and actionable steps to take, which I find to be very useful.
The book was organised into short chapters according to category. It was a book I could read cover to cover or put down and pick up later. In addition to the good organisation of chapters, this book is exceptionally well-edited. I found no grammatical errors at all, making it a very comfortable read. There was nothing I disliked about this book.
On that note, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about fitness, nutrition and health through a holistic and evidence-based approach.
