Review of The Shade of Highfall
Shrew is an orphan in Highfall who survives by thieving and starves most times. We get to know her as a skilled thief who escapes quickly. Introduction about 'the duns' and 'Stilts gang' added essence of certainty to the story. She is a quick-witted, brave, and bold girl who faces lots of hardships throughout the first part. She disguises herself as a young boy to survive in the workhouse. Under pressure, she gets under the sewer, finds a dagger the importance of which she later uncovers. From being a survivor and fighter, she has no idea what the future holds or her past.
The book is allocated into four parts. Each had its rush and will keep us hooked till the end. The map before each part was a key to imagination. The map helps us to get a clear vision. There are lots of characters but not tough to follow. Chapter names were intriguing as we get to dive deeper than chapters with mere numbers. The cover, architecture details and plot were captivating.
I liked everything about the book. There were no negative aspects as the book truly entertained and impressed me. Shrew's character development is at its best in the book. She is smart and funny rooted for her from the beginning. Life is tough for orphans as there won't be guidance or someone to look after them. Her determination and courage are inspiring. She was independent yet dependent on her weapon. The evolution from the wooden dagger to the possession of the spirited dagger was adventurous.
In The Shade of Highfall, The protagonists are crucial in a story, the minor characters that contribute to the development of the protagonist results in a quality tale. The characterisation was on point for minor characters. For instance, when she got help from Wilf, even though it was a tiny effort, the good she did before came back unexpectedly.
The writing style is incredible and keeps one immersed in the story. Fantasy enthusiasts would be enchanted by the mystery in the plot. There were twists, few were predictable yet they did not disturb the puzzle elements of the story.
I would give 4 out of 4 stars for The Shade of Highfall by Mark O'Dell. In the end, the glossary was helpful to know more about the imaginary world created by the author. He managed to create fabulous secret passages. The concept of the secret doors, old gods, the silent knife and creatures were pretty interesting. I relished the adventure with Shrew and the detailing about the environment made the book a hit for me.
