The McCoys Before the Feud is an easy-paced action-adventure that is guaranteed to provide the reader with an enjoyable read. For those of you who seek out adventure stories, but dislike a lot of blood-letting, this could be an ideal choice. The story contains a lot of action. However, it is narrated in a very relaxed and easy-going style. Thomas Allan McCoy has based it on some real-life experiences that come close to the events related in his book.

The tale is set in the immediate post-civil war period, and its main theme is the recovery of valuables stolen from wealthy southerners by crooked union army high ups. While a lot of such treasures were seized by the north to cover the heavy expenditure incurred in waging the war, this also set the stage for a corrupt few to abuse their positions of authority to amass personal fortunes. In the story, under the leadership of a father and son team, a group of like-minded war veterans who belong to the McCoy clan band together to recover some of the stolen riches, and hand a lot of it back to their rightful owners, or to those who need it most. Utilizing their combat training and experiences, this band of men consisting of soldiers who have fought on both sides of the battlefield, fall back on the tactics and maneuvers they were trained in and utilized during the war, and take the reader on an entertaining journey through the extensive war-damaged countryside.

One of the drawbacks in the story from a critical point of view is that everything seems to fall into place too smoothly, and the dangerous missions undertaken by our band of heroes are carried out without major hitches of any kind. This takes away a little from reality, as missions of this sort invariably do not go according to plan, and reversals do take place. Also, it seems like too much background detail is provided about scenes before the action takes place which can bore the reader at times.

Due to the high volume of errors, I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars, as it does not seem to have been professionally edited.

Even though this relates to the immediate post-war period, students of the civil war era will find much of historical interest. The book will also provide good reading material for anyone looking at an adventure story that unfolds at a relaxing pace.
