Review of The Different Kinds Of Monsters
The Different Kinds Of Monsters by Seth Chambers is such a brilliant novel and has everything I could need in a dark fantasy. Filled with thrilling twists and turns, this book has found an interesting way to show the darkest sides of a human soul.
In the age of six, Dylan Armitage, a little boy was taken to the field museum in Chicago by his parents. In there, Dylan suddenly found attracted to a giant articulated skeleton of an Allosaurus named Emily, which causes him to obsessed with Dinosaurs. Later, Armitage family ended up in moving around the country for some reasons and wherever they go, Emily is also seems to appear in the nearest museum which makes it a very weird coincidence. Dylan's whole childhood was spent on the road but he always believed that Emily is his guardian angel and loved to visit her all the time because he thinks that he heard her singing lullabies to him. He grew up loving dinosaurs and studying about them until everything started to go sideways which makes him realized that the Emily the dinosaur he loved is actually up to no good. But, Emily is not the only monster who brought trouble here as there is a much more dangerous monster struggling to break through. This story shows how Dylan strived to keep his family safe from Emily and tried to stop darker sides of his soul from uncovering. But sooner or later, Dylan must accept the truth of his life even though he always tried to avoid it.
I like the way the author had organized his story. As well as we can expect a dark fantasy would do, all the characters are twisted in one way or another. The way the author leads us through the story is also kind of amazing. He has balanced the story in this three different times which are Dylan's present and past and a life time of a young Allosaurus called the First back in The Jurassic period and I am very relieved to say that I did not find that confusing.
The story has completely hooked me up and I was too stunned to even close the book as the author has kept his pace remarkably. But, sometimes it made me uneasy as I am very unprepared to some of the serious topics discussed here. Most of them are unexpected and much darker than I have even imagine but the story was nicely arranged.
The only problem about this book is the lack of knowledge about Dinosaurs explained here. There is no way of knowing whether the audience knows about these Dinosaurs by their names and their behaviors so it could be very useful if there are some descriptions about those creatures. specially back in Jurassic period, there are lot of Dinosaur names but no information about them so, it may be a little bit hard to understand the story for a reader who has zero knowledge about Dinosaurs but, I should say that even though there is no descriptions about those creatures, the story still has the ability of creating a very clear picture about the time back in Jurassic period. The author has brought that whole scenario to life with his great skills of writing and it was truly remarkable. Also, there is no place explaining that how a giant skeletal dinosaur who was dead millions of years ago was able to move around the country at her own will or, how did she do all these things without being noticed. Maybe she had some psychological influences on the employees working in the museums so she can force them to move her to wherever she likes but, there is no place mentioned such an incidence.
The story was built up in a really nice way but, I don't think this book is very suitable for oversensitive people. Also, as there are various instances of child abuse, sexual abuse, incest and more so, this book is most definitely for an audience eighteen and above. However, I rate The Different Kinds Of Monsters 4 out of 4 stars because, I had a great time reading it and it always kept me turning pages. If your prefer a dark fantasy with a bit of thrilling experience, here is your choice.
