[Following is a volunteer review of "Blood Red Moon" by Lee Roberts.]
Lee Roberts' Blood Red Moon is a well-written crime novel featuring two main protagonists, Diana Miranda and Austin West, who are trying to solve a murder in New Orleans.
At the beginning of the book, Diana, a paramedic, goes with her friend Janet one Friday to a chemical plant for a safety drill. Diana becomes acquainted with Austin, a mechanic who is also participating in the drill. A tragic accident occurs during the safety drill, which results in Freddy Etheridge's death. Freddy happens to be a friend of Austin. Although initially it appears to be an accident after a closer look Austin and Diana realize there was foul play involved. They take it upon themselves to figure out the murder. Throughout the book, Diana and Austin do some investigations and uncover a lot of mysteries
In this book, a variety of groups are mentioned, such as the vampires and the voodoo practitioners. Their association with Freddy brought them together. It seems that Freddy dealt with a lot of bad people and wasn't a good person. Besides being an expert in chemistry, he was also a drug manufacturer and dealer.
Reading about Austin and Diana was enjoyable. Their conversations were entertaining. There was a light-hearted tone to it. Since the book dealt with some serious themes like death and violence, I appreciated that the author included some humorous bits. It was a good balance. I also loved Austin's determination, even though he wasn't the smartest tool, he nevertheless had a lot of courage. Diana's strong personality appealed to me. Being able to read about a strong female protagonist was quite empowering.
There are a lot of twists and turns in the book. Despite the author's attempt to keep the reader on the edge of their seat, some of the twists didn't make the impact that they should've and seemed a little comical. I was rather disappointed by this.
I will give this book 3 out of 4 stars. I found the ending to be a bit anticlimactic. When I finally got to the final event, I couldn't help but feel disappointed because it had been an intense build-up. I felt the ending was quite rushed. In spite of that, it was an enjoyable read. This book would be best suited to a mature audience since it contains themes like violence and erotica. It will also appeal to those who enjoy crime and investigations.
