[Following is a volunteer review of "Liner" by Chris Coppel.]
Liner, by Chris Coppel, is a story about a man who has lost his hope, resulting from some devastating events that recently took place in his life. He decides he no longer wants to continue his journey on Earth, so he begins to formulate a plan, by conducting research, about how to end his life. His detailed plan entails boarding a magnificent ocean liner and enjoying the last few days of his life splurging on luxuries before his final exit. However, there are loopholes in his plan that were not included in his meticulous research, and he finds himself faced with a strange journey he never thought possible.
I found this book intriguing in many aspects. The characters’ personalities and details of their lives were well developed. Being an aficionado of luxury ocean vessels, including the Titanic, the author's description of the ocean liner, including the construction build, halls, stairways, rooms, and amenities made me feel like I was onboard with the fictional passengers and crew. The author’s integration of scientific methodologies, combined with the supernatural occurrences, made the impossible seemingly believable.
This book may not be appealing to a reader who bases his/her life solely on factual evidence, even knowing it is a work of fiction while reading it. Also, this book contains a plethora of scientific terminology, so if the reader does not have a science background, much of the context will not be fully understood.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book was exceptionally well edited. The transition from chapter to chapter kept me enthralled, and eager to find out what each character was going to encounter next, and how each character would react to the occurrences. The author’s descriptive style of writing made it easy for me, as the reader, to feel like I was part of the story and standing beside them, witnessing the events that were occurring in their lives. The author clearly defined the who, what, and where, leaving me to contemplate the mystery of the what and the why, even after I finished the book. From the Prologue to the Epilogue, reading this book gave me a chilling perspective on a subject that science continues to attempt to defy, but never will.
I recommend this book for both teens and adults. In my opinion, this book will appeal to readers who have a love of art, science, mystery, and the belief of existence beyond our world.
