Review of Broken Inn

[Following is a volunteer review of "Broken Inn" by A.W. Baldwin.]
Broken Inn is both fast-paced and action packed. The action starts at the very beginning with a flash flood and is quickly followed by numerous chase scenes through the mountains on foot.
One of the two main characters is Hailey who is a college journalism senior. She is trying to navigate her way through her senior year as well as life in general after the unexpected death of her mother. She starts out living in Washington but moves to Utah in order to take advantage of an externship that will also help her financially so she can complete her education. Hailey’s externship is with a newspaper in the same area as the inn. While she’s out exploring her new surroundings on a mountain bike, she witnesses what she believes is a crime. She also thinks she may have been seen by the suspects so makes an effort to quickly disappear. The next day, she meets her new editor who asks her to write a piece on the inn and the renovations that are in progress.
Relic is the other main character. He sports a goatee and a pony tail and lives off the land by choice. He is seen by locals as reclusive and an environmentalist. The majority of his time is spent hiking the mountainous areas of southern Utah between various campsites. Relic is suspicious of something unusual he finds in the vicinity of the inn.
Hailey and Relic meet unexpectedly and become involved while attempting to figure out what is really going on at the inn. Although each has seen something seemingly unrelated, they both realize that there has to be a connection. Their goal is to find the truth and see it through to the end.
This book is fast paced and could be read in one sitting. It’s hard to put the book down in anticipation of what happens next. Each chapter is devoted to a specific character so events are seen through either Hailey’s eyes or Relic’s eyes. This perspective allows the reader to get to know the characters thoroughly and makes us empathize with their situations. The story and the characters are unusual and don’t follow the norm which is refreshing.
A.W. Baldwin has written an excellent book and I could not find a single negative aspect in Broken Inn.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It kept me interested from the first page until the last page. There are no slow parts and there is an abundance of action which keeps it at the 4 level. In addition, the book stayed in my thoughts even after I finished it. I can totally see this being made into a great movie.
I would recommend this book to teenagers and adults who enjoy intrigue, action and mystery. While there is violence, it is not graphic and is minimal.
