[Following is a volunteer review of "Speedy hurled through havoc" by Dave Letterfly Knoderer.]
Speedy: Hurled Through Havoc tells the story of the author's journey by roaming across the country in an RV, the reasons behind the journey and the people that he met. As an autobiography, it also contains how he discovers his emotional disturbance as part of past trauma experience. It presents fragments of his long journey to find peace and stability by ironically through living as a wanderer.
I understand that the book telling the author's personal life story, but the way author describes an event or something is way too long and tends to use complex sentences way too many. It would be easier to understand what he was trying to tell by cutting and dividing them down into simpler sentences rather than adding too much additional clauses and conjunction with commas. It is difficult to keep focus on the flow of the story. Moreover, there are a lot of uncommon and foreign terminologies for the vast majority of regular readers. It would be better if there is footnote in each page to provide general terminology for unfamiliar terms regarding circus performance, airbrushing or mechanical components. Adding graphic illustration would also help, since the author also employs a lot of procedural texts.
It is difficult to transform a physical experience into words and sentences, but the author did a good job in trying to describe movements of circus performances. As a reader who have zero knowledge about circus, I could grasp a glimpse of how circus operates behind the scenes and how it is actually more detailed compare to what we actually have seen.
I give this book a solid 2 out of 4. I love how Dave "Letterfly" Knoderer shares his personal doubt and guilt. As a fellow human being who always feel lost and lacking, I could find a sense of comradery towards his inner struggle. We are often holding grudges and trivial problems bit by bit throughout our lives, without realizing that all emotions built up will explode eventually. I wish I have that short of courage to be able to get past my past and share my vulnerability. However, I feel that this book contains too many fragments of his life and lack of deeper understanding. I wish I could see the depth and emotions of his relationship with his family more. I feel like he understands Betty the mule better than his family. Moreover, every title on each chapter represents an event or a person that he met during his journey. It makes the book easier to read since all the events are in accord with the timeline of his life. Nevertheless, I feel the need to reduce some events or person that have the least impact on his life to limit unnecessary things and extend the memorable and specific events.
Speedy: Hurled Through Havoc is suitable for millennials who are feeling lost and trying to find the meaning of life. Through Knoderer's personal struggle that he generously unveiled, we could look up to him as a mentor in life. Especially in the current state when the world is spinning too fast. We could take our time to read the book and experience his journey before the internet and social media took over.
