Higher Ground is the written version of an audiobook, of the same name, by Sophia Edwards-Bennett. The book is addressed to cancer patients. It gives methods on how they can keep their spirits up, on their journey to recovery. The author imparts the knowledge that she has gained while working as a radiation oncologist. She gives guidelines on how cancer patients can bolster their mental health. She explains that mental fortitude is important in the fight against cancer.

I liked how short the book was. The author immediately delves into her message and imparts her knowledge. She calls it the Big-C Re-Attitude elements of Hope, Identity, Self-Worth, Life Appraisal, Admiration/Affirmation, Mind Rehabilitation, and Renewed Purpose. She explains each one, and how they can help patients. The book is only 32 pages long, which makes it easy to read. This is very important, as the intended audience will probably have more important things on their minds, and may not have time to read a long book.

I enjoyed the language used. I learned new words such as armamentarium, which was delightful. She also included poetry throughout the text, which was lovely. The mix of poetry and prose was well balanced and easy to read. Her dedication to her patients shone through the text. She viewed their success in treatment as fulfilling her purpose on earth. Many people would love to have such a dedicated doctor, as she deeply understands the psychological trauma cancer patients endure. This is a much-needed self-help book for those facing cancer. The chant given for cancer patients looked quite helpful for people looking for affirmations.

However, some people might find it difficult to understand some words. This can be solved easily with the help of a dictionary. This did not hinder my enjoyment of the book and expanded my vocabulary. It is a treat for those who enjoy learning new words. She weaves a story through her words, which ensures the book is never boring. She uses language as a bridge to communicate that cancer does not have to be scary.

This book was exceptionally well-edited as I did not find any typos or errors. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it serves its purpose of encouraging those suffering from cancer. I would recommend it to people afflicted with cancer. People who may have family or friends suffering from cancer may also benefit from reading this book. It was very informative as well as being encouraging.
