[Following is a volunteer review of "How To Be Successful" by M. Curtis McCoy.]
M. Curtis McCoy’s How To Be Successful is an inspirational book about how to take active steps towards building and maintaining not just a financially successful life but one that is enjoyable overall. The author explains to the reader how to learn new habits that will turn them into overnight successes in their chosen fields. Habits like practicing delayed gratification, building quality friendships, and teaching people how to treat you. This book is a summary of the formula that different successful businessmen, church leaders, and entrepreneurs use in their day-to-day lives to maintain their level of success.
This book is not just a drop-down list of what to do and what not to do. M. Curtis McCoy gives his own personal account and experience; from being diagnosed with brain cancer to building a successful company. The author also incorporates interview answers from high achievers in different fields like the military, the church, and tech companies. He uses these relevant examples to prove that success is something that can be achieved by anyone, at any time as long as one is willing to put in the work. All you need is a vision, an endgame, a plan, passion, and prayer. Not forgetting an attitude of gratitude. This book forces the reader to look inward at their thoughts, attitudes, behavior, and mindset. And also outside at the people, they surround themselves with. The kind of teams and friendships they build at work, and how these components affect their path to a successful life.
What I enjoyed most about this book is how every chapter is filled with a nugget of wisdom that can be applied in every facet of life. I especially liked how the author does not give a magic formula to success; he doesn’t even give one definition of success. He gives the reader an array of choice definitions from the multiple interview answers. The reader is thus able to pick a definition that resonates with them and their life goals. I also love how simple and straight to the point this book is.
Even though the book has some biblical references, the dominant theme is based on the qualities of loyalty, honesty, integrity humility, and strength of character which are character traits that anyone can have despite their religious beliefs. The book also features a number of inspirational quotes from different authors which adds to the conversational tone and helps the book's objective shine through. This book had zero errors so I can say that it was professionally edited.
I am thus rating How To be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy 4 out of 4. This wonderful book opened my mind to the possibilities of living a successful life simply by learning good habits today and having the self-discipline to stick to them. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is on a self-improvement journey, wants to start a business or even someone who wants to lead a healthier more significant life and has no idea where to start.
