Review of No Dark Clouds
No Dark Clouds is a fictional tale about when Jesus was here on Earth. R.W. Nelson, the author of this book, took the gospels written in the Bible and created a novel out of them. By following the group of crippled and orphaned children that Nelson has created in his book, we are able to see the events described in the Bible through their eyes, and through the perspectives of all the other ordinary people living in Jerusalem at that time. At the end of the book, there is a study guide of sorts that compels the reader to think more about the events described in the book, and digs deeper into many of the ideas expressed throughout the novel.
Being a Christian myself, I enjoyed how biblically accurate the book was, and how the extra story elements added to the story told in the bible, rather than taking away from it. Nelson does an amazing job adding to the perspectives and backgrounds of many of the people in the Bible. It was really intriguing to read about the backgrounds (fictional though they were) of some of the people Jesus healed, and how much he changed their lives. I also enjoyed reading about the backgrounds of the Pharisees, Pilate, and even Barabbas, even though they were fictional backstories. They still gave really neat perspectives that I had not thought about before.
While reading No Dark Clouds , there was one problem that seemed to be present throughout, and that was the lack of creative description and vocabulary. While I wouldn't go as far as to say the language was repetitive, the sentences were all too often uninteresting and dull. Nelson passed up what I considered to be good opportunities to show the reader what was happening, and instead told us outright everything that happened, leaving nothing to the reader's imagination.
The uninteresting language throughout the story made the book slightly harder to get through, and it wasn't as interesting and intriguing for me. However, his could be related to the fact that I already knew the basic plot. I do however think the poor language and lack of intrigue was enough to take away a star, so I give this book 3 out of 4 stars .
I think No Dark Clouds would be interesting to a variety of people. I think Christians who already know the story of Christ would enjoy the new viewpoints this story provides. I also think that anybody who wanted to learn about this story would enjoy this book, as in some cases the more modern language can make it easier to understand than the Bible, which was written a very long time ago.
