Street Sweeper is a story about a young lady who has just graduated from medical school and is eager to change the world, she wants to do something which had never been done before; treat patients before they come to the hospital. She has an experimental research idea of using the placebo effect to cure drug addiction. Joanne Winter, against her family’s advice, decides to become a homeless person in order to interact with her test subjects and carry out her experiment, what follows is not really surprising.
The book drew me in because of its originality, I had never read a story with such a premise before but I was also very skeptical about the protagonist being successful from the onset because the study was highly likely to be compromised but the ending still wasn’t what I had been expecting. Her life changes in such a short period of time and I kept on questioning her decision making capabilities but also didn’t get too invested because from the time we first meet Joanne she comes off like an over ambitious know it all ready to do anything to prove her theory because she believes that she is right, her cussing a lot also put me off, I could not sympathize or relate to her at all. I give the basis some points but the execution was not good.

The story is told from the protagonist’s point of view and the author does a lot of telling instead of showing, which just failed to keep me emotionally attached to the story. The book had no chapters at all, it just starts with no introduction or chapter indications and goes on until the end which wasn’t clear too, I could not tell whether the story was over or I had gotten a book with missing pages.

I would give Street Sweeper by Paul Drewitt 2 stars out of four. If not for the unique premise I would have given it 1 star out of four because the execution was too sloppy and mediocre. There is a lot of repetition; Joanne Winters repeatedly mentions how she doesn’t want to fit in that badly whenever she is expected to do something by the group she finds and yet she still goes on to make very questionable decisions. Even with these flaws, I appreciated the fact that the story wasn’t riddled with medical terms a layman wouldn’t understand so it was very simple to follow. If you are put off by the use of profanities I would not recommend this book because curse words are used from the very beginning.
Would I read this book again? Absolutely not but I am not mad that I read it the first time. If you are a new reader who is into medical-ish drama/YA you may like it.
