Fred Sievert has authored several Christian based books regarding God and grace. In this book Fast Starting a Career of Consequence: Workbook Fred has specifically directed his Christian principles to the goal of succeeding in business. It is a companion book to one of his former writings: Fast Starting a Career of Consequence: Practical Christ-Centered Advice for Entering or Re-Entering the Workforce. This book definitely fits the description of workbook. Almost every chapter includes lists, questions, challenges and space for notes. The reader is encouraged to write down self appraisals or goals, how to accomplish those goals and dates for completion.

Fred spent his life proving that Christ-centered principles can contribute to success in the business world. The genesis for the book started out with a guideline for his daughter who was a new graduate working in the corporate world and frustrated by the seemingly difficult opportunities to progress in the company. I like the fact that the author expanded his counsel to not only include newly graduated youth but also those re-entering the workforce such as stay-at-home moms or vets coming out of the military. He even included such contemporary situations as those who lost their jobs due to COVID-19 and are starting up again or working for new employers.

Chapters 1 through 5 discuss Biblical principles that not only can but should be applicable to the workplace. Principles such as finding your spiritual gifts, practicing the golden rule and including prayer in all your decisions and relationships. He even concludes each chapter with a one paragraph prayer relating to the topic of that chapter. His use of personal examples from his own life and experiences, cement his beliefs that faith and career are a successful combination. Chapters 6 to 15 are start up tips for finding success and include practical advice like arriving early and leaving late, knowing and practicing the company mission and vision statements, developing strategic thinking and tips for giving good presentations. Fred does a good job of quoting professional sources and magazines to support his recommendations and those sources are included in the Endnotes section.

I enjoyed reading the book and found it much more than a workbook due to my personal belief in these Christian principles. There were several instances while reading the book when I was reminded of times in my own career when I tried to implement my beliefs into my job and my relationships. My one disappointment was the lack of stories that could have made the reading more colorful and inspiring. Fred even included the need for sharing stories in his recommendations for giving good presentations. A few other narratives from the lives of other successful businessmen who were examples of integrity and faith would have been supportive.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Again, the reason for doing so are my personal convictions of the wisdom of Fred Sievert's recommendations. I feel that those readers with Judeo Christian principles will find this book extremely useful in finding career success, especially if they take the time to answer all the questions and set the goals that he provides. Anyone who is looking for ways to succeed in their careers will find aspects of this workbook beneficial.
