When I select a book for myself, half is for the description of the story and half is if the cover grabs my attention (kind of like choosing wine haha) based on those things, I probably would not have picked this book. But I am glad I did. It's easy to read, but not childish. I didn't know it was considered Youth Fiction until after I was done. I'm an adult, but love reading the YF genre - Harry Potter, Percy Jackson etc. Anything with magic is a win for me.
Rion is interesting and different. He's your normal kid that has mastered switching schools a dozen times, but wait! There's more! You see the mom from his point of view, and not much more than that. I love his music choices.
The action builds gradually, like Rion's skills. It is build up and backstory into about halfway into the book, then the action starts.

If you like magic/sci-fi and the like, give it a read - I give it 3 out of 4 and will definitely be looking for the next in the series. I am invested and interested in what happens next
