At the end of the American Civil War, the Confederate army soldiers are forced to surrender, hand in their weapons and are sent home with a great sense of loss and empty pockets. For the McCoy men, the latter might not have to be an option as Thomas Jr. aka Tommy has received vital information from his former betrothed Terry about the secret locations of caches where southern loot is being stored, hidden away from the Union army by some of it's corrupt officers. The McCoy men set out on a Robinhood mission to take back what belongs to the southern families and hopefully attain a share of the wealth for themselves to rebuild whatever is left of their lives. With barely enough resources, the McCoys scout out the locations and devise plans on how to achieve their objective and not get killed in the process.

A fascinating story about love, loyalty and commitment to family. The McCoys: Before the feud is a deep dive into a part of American history from the front line soldier's point of view. The author, Thomas A McCoy, certainly put a lot of detail in his writing as he clearly described the actions of the McCoy men as the events unfolded. The book tells of the uncertainties and hardships faced by soldiers and their families in a post war world. It also offers hope for a fresh start at the end of the war for everyone, soldiers and civilians alike.

There is a great gender imbalance in the book most especially because the story line is situated in the 19th century where women were regarded as second class citizens. But seeing how the author is of a modern age, there could have been more creative ways to incorporate female characters into the story or simply more reference could have been made to the few female characters already in the book. As one reads The McCoys: Before the feud , one may wonder if the McCoy clan only consisted of men and if these men were just dropped on the earth in the middle of the civil war. There is little or no mention of the McCoy mothers, sisters or wives. Another negative aspect is that there are few chapters with actual conversations among the characters. Most chapters have a broad narration of the story and the conversations are limited to a few lines. This makes the book seem like an endless history essay rather than a novel and the mystery behind the story is lost.

I rate The McCoys: Before the feud 2 out of 4 . It has rich details as to the unfolding of events. However, it also has a few bland areas which readers may find uninteresting.

I recommend the book to action lovers who will find the detailed action packed chapters interesting as well as anyone who loves an adventure.
