The Thundering Herd is a timeless and inspiring history about John E. Peltier’s life between the 1950s and 1960s. Peltier’s family comprises twelve children where he is the fifth born, and all these children, including Peltier, grew up when family values, Christianity, and hard work were the norm. Peltier presents his family history with humor and often includes sad stories of their lives during that period describing the far his family has come and the basis for who they are today. From their modest origins to their current patriarch, the Peltier family visualizes Americana and what it means to be a self-sufficient individual. It also showcases a representative of a more prominent family and, as a result, a considerate Christian incredibly grateful to God for all that life has shown.

John ended up in Vietnam after completing ranger school and medical reservist training. He utilized his adventures in the military as a background to narrate his childhood. Knowing his significant life experiences, family, the farm, and the ranch made John even more apparent as he wrote this story. He drifted back into regular life and completed his degree after marshaling out of the Army. In 1969, his father died of a heart attack at 54, leaving him with five young siblings. Simultaneously he met Janie, his wife, and discovered his calling in construction, and all these were his responsibilities in life.

However, John realizes a more remarkable and equally fruitful endeavor by interweaving his Vietnam memories into the story. He takes his readers on a spiritual awakening as well, via meeting guys from locations far apart from the farms of Texas while in basic training to the human tragedy and dealing with life and witnessing death in Vietnam. Like so many others who served in Vietnam, John's encounters in Vietnam enabled him to meditate on similar experiences he confronted at home. As a result, the reader can witness the incredible insights that he reaches in his meditations on life, its significance, and God's mission for humankind.

John expresses his thankfulness to a loving God who poured grief and agony on his own Son to settle debts that some of us couldn't bear. I award 4 out of 4 stars to this incredible memoir. The Thundering Herd was edited professionally since I could not find a single error, and readers will enjoy the family antics, comedy, and affection as outlaid by John.

The book describes how true character is built. It is the account of one man representing what it takes to grow up on a ranch. I recommend this book to individuals struggling with love issues and also to individuals in storms of life. It will help them understand that happiness and contentment is living a life with God, recognizing that you may face challenges, but He will always be there for you. It is a well-written, inspiring, and yet emotional read by John Peltier.
