Review of Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?
"When one looks at addiction only as a set of behaviors, such misunderstandings can exist. When one truly understands what addiction is and why it takes place, one need not resort to such methods to diagnose or detect it." - Page 111.
Kyle Oh is a medical doctor specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. His practice enabled many encounters with patients suffering from pain. However, a patient's demise owing to an overdose on pain medication triggered him to explore the world of addiction. Kyle tackles drug addiction by using science and experience as his weapons of choice. In this book, he sheds light on commonly abused drugs. His first signatory move in dealing with drug addiction is by asking an eye-opening question: "How did the drug make you feel?" – Page 14.
Dr. Kyle expounds on addiction and its relation to genetics. He demystifies the perception imposed on addicts by society. The book offers a clear-cut understanding of what it means to be genuinely addicted. His book goes a step further by giving approaches to the prevention and treatment of addiction based on science and life experiences by some of his patients. Due to its voluminous nature, the author lists down references used after every chapter. The book also bears a list of terminologies with their definitions found within the book's last pages.
Why Can't Johnny Just Quit? by Kyle Oh is an intriguing, scientific-based study on pain management and addiction. The book offers a fresh and different view on addiction. It starts from a fundamental level by providing a unique definition and characterization of addiction. But it also dives deeper into the practical aspect by determining suitable approaches to tackling incidences of drug addiction.
I initially was skeptical upon reading this book. But the voluminous study coupled with true accounts of patients' experiences cleared my doubts. The book bears content from research studies, patient and clinical experience to help readers understand drug addiction.
The book goes further by challenging the norms used for managing addiction and society's perception of those who are addicted or abuse drugs. In addition, it offers a scientific approach to the management of addicts. However, I have to point out that some of his views on the topic may be controversial. Therefore, it is crucial to note that the author presents solid arguments based on studies and clinical experience.
Therefore, I would give this book a rating of 4 out of 4. This book presents a unique and contrasting view on addiction compared to its general understanding amongst the public. There are many things that I liked about this book. Top of the list was the rich scientific content that formed the basis of the author's arguments. There was nothing I disliked about the book. The book had very few grammatical errors, but the author professionally edited it.
I recommend this book to health professionals. There is much that health workers can learn from the author's knowledge and experience. I also recommend this book to recovering and current addicts. This book provides fundamental knowledge that can help such understand the disease afflicting them.
