Review of Kalayla
After the death of her husband, Maureen shifted to the building owned by the family of Lena. That is where she lives with her eleven year old daughter Kalayla. At the time she was waiting tables at Eddie's and cleaning other people's houses, to earn a living. This was during the 1999 summer holiday. Kalayla used the opportunity to earn bills at Clean Duds because she used to keep an eye on other people's laundry for a fee. Lena, on the other hand, is also a widow and mother of four. Mikie, Jimmy, Mark and Joey.
The story is about the beauty of having a family, or people who care about you, just like you expect your family to. The story is also about the different forms of love, for example, parental, lust and so on whichever it maybe. It also encompasses decision making. This is in regard to having a number of options and choosing one, it's effects, whether good or bad, and the results as well. The story also shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
When I started reading the story, I thought it's about a woman who has advanced in age and young girl. But no, it's about first impressions, the impressions one gets when one meets another, the feelings and thoughts one gets when one learns about the experiences of another. For example, when Lena saw Kalayla, she was reminded of her twins, Mikie and Jimmy. When Kalayla saw Lena, she thought she was weird due to her choice of wardrobe, and the fact that she looked her age. This story is told from three angles. That is, Kalayla, an eleven year old girl, Maureen, a thirty year old woman and Lena, a seventy-two year old lady.
My favourite character was Kalayla, for being happy, humorous, joyous, and having an attitude too. Though, she had a lot on her plate too. I felt sad, when I learnt about the ordeal Lena had to go through while she was still married to her husband Joey. And I hated Joey for his abusive nature and ways towards Lena. I also found Clarence annoying. In the case of Maureen, I got to understand a parent's concerns and worries towards their children. I really loved the story, especially the sections that talked about the party and family get-togethers. I felt anger, joy, hope, sadness, and happy too. I also noticed a number of mistakes, though they were less than ten. Hence, this story, Kalayla authored by Jeannie Nicholas, is given a rating of 3 out of 4 stars by me.
This story is about love, family, friends, and homesteads. This is because it presents the advantages and disadvantages, effects, results, and uses of each. I recommend this story to persons who love stories entangled around ordinary and extraordinary norms and practices of any given society, parenthood, and friendship. I learnt a great deal, and I think you will enjoy, while learning too. If you love reading stories that are very interesting, believe me, this is your story. Because Kalayla, Lena and Maureen are well packaged.
