The story started with Gregory McGregor receiving a call from his mentor and best friend Charley. Charley was being mysterious in their conversation. He wanted to meet Greg in person and that he is sending a package to him by express. He said that what he has sent will be of use to Greg during this particular adventure which included an air ticket from Minnesota to Anchorage, Alaska, via Los Angeles and maybe a number with several zeros in the near future for them. Hours after receiving the call from Charley, an unexpected traumatic event happened that made Greg decide to depart for their meet-up earlier than planned. That particular event was the start of a rollercoaster ride that catapulted Greg into a cloak and dagger interaction with some nefarious characters along the way. With one traumatic event after the other, Greg ended up in Alaska and meeting Charley’s roommate/best friend, Consuela “Corky” Gonzales. Running all over the place with unclear and unverified information, Greg and Corky end up running for their lives and proceeded to LA in order to secretly follow the instructions given by Charley in the package he sent to Greg. Charley Farnsworth is the brains of TINMAN, which is one of the major construction and engineering companies in the world. Gregory McGregor is a post-doctoral research fellow in a geotechnical institute in Minnesota and also a consultant on heavy construction projects where there are some geological problems involved. When things started escalating towards “dangerous” level, Greg and Corky can’t help but be intrigued as to what could possibly make these nefarious characters want to harm them. What do they possess that they are being ran after and these people don’t just want to catch them but really harm them? What follows is a turbulent ride to outrun and outsmart these same people. Greg and Corky had to resort to clandestine/covert moves in order to stay alive at the same time not really knowing what they have or what these people are after.

What I love about the book is the “mystery” part as I love mysteries. I love the fact that Charley didn’t immediately tell Greg what “the thing” that he wanted to meet with him about is and instead sent him a package full of stuff that he could use on his way to meeting Charley. I also love the fact that Greg had to travel in order to get to the bottom of the mystery. Just like any mystery, there are a lot of unknowns and I know that that’s what makes a story more intriguing and will definitely entice the readers to continue on reading. As an action movie buff, the actions involve in the story are very much welcome. Descriptions of the places and the events that happened in the story is also something that I love a lot. Much respect to Ms. Karen Black and Mr. Matt Walton who were able to give a good description on the highlights of the story because it clarifies things to the reader.

What I didn’t like about the story was the fact that although Greg and Corky knew their lives were in danger, they still sometimes do things without regard for this. Just like their decision to go into the corporate offices of Tinman not knowing if they are not the culprits behind all the attack on them. It’s as if they can just do things easily without repercussions. They even went their separate ways in some of the scenes so that they could cover more ground and investigate faster and further. Another point that I didn’t like is that the run-around is too long, I know that Greg didn’t have much to go on except a place and Charley’s word and instructions but still the run-around to their ultimate goal or destination took too long. They had to go back and forth to finally get to the crux of the whole thing.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 STARS. I would have given it 2.5 if it was allowed. I love the fact that it involves a mystery that needed to be solved. I love Greg and Corky, two smart main characters will usually entice the readers to continue on reading. I love the way the authors describe the different scenes in the story. And as I mentioned before, I love the travels in between the highly tensed situations, it served as a breather for the main characters as well as the readers.

For those people who love to read a good mystery book, I would recommend this. Although the tale is not perfect, there is a certain appeal in it. You can learn about new places or learn more about them. You can enjoy the certain appeal of one Gregory McGregor who is straitlaced but still endearing and slowly finding his “fun” side as their adventure continues on. Ms. Corky Gonzalez is witty and lovely and I think anyone would fall in love with her.
