[Following is a volunteer review of "Yesterday" by Samyann.]
What would happen if we met somebody and instantly felt a cosmic connection with them? Do souls walk across the forgotten sands of time? Yesterday by Samyann tries to answer these questions through its phenomenal storyline. This book is a unique mash-up of genres, ranging from romance to history to suspense thriller. It revolves around the concept of reincarnation and keeps you engaged till the last page.
We are introduced to Amanda Parker, whose life has been full of tragedies. Having lost both her parents at a young age, she also loses her fiancé to an accident. This trauma imbibes in her a deep-rooted belief that she will eventually lose anyone whom she will love. Therefore, she becomes unattached to people and decides to never fall in love. But destiny plays its part and ultimately makes her path cross with Mark Patrick Callahan, a handsome police officer from the Chicago Police Department. She saves his life and both of them feel an unexplained connection towards each other. The cosmic upheaval of emotions becomes stronger with every meeting. Things become more mysterious when Amanda buys an antique grandfather clock that belonged to the era of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Mark eventually falls in love with her and tries to win her heart. But she remains stoic in her stance of loving no one. As things turn more bizarre in terms of their transcendental experiences and connections, they finally decide to find a solution for it. They approach Mary Axelrod, Amanda’s godmother, who is a psychologist. She makes Amanda undergo past life regression therapy to delve into the unanswered mysteries engulfing the star-struck lives of Amanda and Mark. The therapies reveal morbid details of her past life. Are Mark and Amanda soulmates? What was the link of her past life with the mysterious chimes from the grandfather clock? The answers to all these questions lie in the gripping plot that Samyann has weaved so beautifully. Honestly, it is an unputdownable book.
The positive aspects of this book are uncountable. The plot is very emotional and engaging . Reincarnation is one of my favourite topics, and the author has done full justice to it. The writing is eloquent. Readers will feel as if they are a part of the story and will find their adrenaline rushing across the pages. The transitions between the past and present life are smooth. There is not a single dull moment throughout the length of the book. The historical facts associated with the Great Chicago Fire, the American Civil War, St. Michael’s Church, and racism in American history have been authentically mixed with the storyline and therefore add an edge of reality to it. The romantic elements in the plot are a solace to the heart. The love, faith, and loyalty of Mark towards Amanda, even though she continued to drive him away, makes us believe in the power of true love. His character makes us fall in love with the idea of never letting go and waiting till eternity for our soulmates.
The characters are well-etched and the protagonists keep the readers hooked with their emotional scenes. I could feel the pain in Amanda’s heart and her fear of loving people. The sense of emotional detachment was reasonable on her part. But my favourite character was Mark, who is every girl’s dream. His physically charming attributes and witty mind will surely make you fall in love with him. The vulnerabilities and emotions hidden behind his over-energetic attitude touched me. His strength of mind and perseverance will surely inspire many. Their romance, transcending over different eras, will strike the chords of your heart.
The negative aspects of this book are noteworthy too. I did not like the use of foul language and the fact that the characters were always drinking. The female protagonist appears confused in several instances, which aren’t in tandem with her mature character outlook. She keeps driving Mark away and then keeps getting intimate with him at the next moment.
The book is exceptionally well edited. Thus, keeping all the positive aspects in mind, I will happily rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I will recommend this book to anyone who is facing self-doubt just like Amanda. Read this and find your soul gravitating back to your conscience. It will also be interesting to the ones interested in history because my knowledge got updated with the factually correct information provided in the plot. The theme of reincarnation and cosmic love is a treat to the soul. Since there are mild sexual scenes, I will not recommend this book to young readers.
