Review of Final Notice
Final Notice by Van Fleisher is a fictionalized account of advanced technology in the form of a watch that can accurately predict death. This book focuses on a lot of real-world polarizing political beliefs that are currently relevant today. The book has some core main characters with a multitude of supporting characters, some with very brief stories, that span the length of the book. Each character’s story is either directly or indirectly influenced by a “Final Notice” delivery on the watch. The decisions that are made after receiving the alert, whether it be violence and crime, or peace and harmony in enjoying your last days, are examined in this book. While this is a work of fiction, there are some very poignant issues that are brought up throughout the book. The most glaring issue is gun safety, the NRA’s large footprint in politics, and the intersection of technology and medicine. The main characters, Vince and Trudi, carry the story forward. From understanding their political beliefs in the twilight of their lives, coming to terms with their mortality, and how those beliefs change as the world changes around them, this book takes the reader on a journey that examines those topics. It is an introspective look into each of our own beliefs.
This book was very well written and edited. The author used a lot of fictionalized accounts of very real-world scenarios and topics that are constantly in the news cycle even to this day. A lot of issues were addressed, including gun safety, alternative facts, race relations, immigration, school shootings, and the future of technology. Even though there is a slight slant toward left-winged readers, all of these “hot-button” political topics were handled very well throughout this book that even a right-winged reader might chuckle at some of the political satire. The focus on some very tough political topics was balanced using humor, although sometimes dark, which helps to keep the reader engaged.
The only constructive criticism to mention is that there are a lot of supporting characters that are briefly mentioned in the book. They each play an important role in the story but sometimes they get lost in the shuffle of the overarching plot.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because of the political slant listed above. Some readers might be turned off in reading this if they have very strong, emotional beliefs on gun rights and strongly support the GOP.
The recommended audience for this book is people who enjoy fictionalized accounts of current events and politics. Those who enjoy technology and medicine will also enjoy this book. Anyone who falls into extremes of the political spectrum may not enjoy the topics discussed in this book.
