In the parallel universe of the Land of Grome, humans exist alongside elves, wizards, talking animals, and walking trees. Thoral Mighty Fist is a barbarian warrior known for his striking appearance and superhuman strength. Bradfast, a talking koi fish that breathes air and spends much of his time in Thoral's belt pouch, and Warlordhorse, a legendary horse, are his companions. They go on adventures together and eventually end up drinking warm ale at the Inn of the Gruesomely Gashed Gnome. Everything goes well until the king of elves invites the trio to a feast one day. Here they meet Princess Nalweegie, King Elfrod's daughter, who they had earlier saved from an evil wizard, Necrogrond. The princess is captivated by Thoral and constantly keeps trying to impress him. Knowing this, the king dispatches Thoral and his companions on a mission to destroy the evil force behind the Bad Religion. Thoral encounters things of his past on this mission that will forever alter his future. Thoral's incredible strength and excellent marksmanship can defeat practically anyone in Grome, but he is terrible at making judgments and handling sensitive situations. Read on to find out if Thoral can fulfill his mission and uphold his promises while discovering unsettling details about Grome and his past, while the lives of his loved ones are at stake.

Regardless of whether Thoral's quest was successful or how the story ended, the book was so interesting that it was worth every minute spent on it. I have to admit that this book is one of the most unique reads in the fantasy genre that I have come across so far. The author has combined the fantasy, science fiction, and comedy genres. Although the book concentrated on humor, the story featured a proper and well-constructed storyline with epic twists and unexpected events. The book began with a map that depicted the terrain clearly and humorously, with names like ‘The Grumpy Sea’ and ‘The Finger-shaped Tower’ given to various regions. The characters' personalities are amusingly contradictory, such as Warlordhorse, who is basically a legend who can smell danger and jumps into any battle alongside Thoral, is terrified of heights. And Bradfast, the goldfish, freaked out once because he nearly drowned in water. In fact, Grome's most powerful weapon is known as ‘The Pudding of Power’.

Fish Wielder strikes an ideal balance of drama, parody, light humor, and a bunch of made-up jokes that were sometimes unamusing and confusing when repeated frequently. The most common is when Thoral is in situations where he should have died, but because he is 'Thoral Mighty Fist,' he always manages to escape death. Although this was intended to be funny, the scenario grew tiresome after a while. Also, the second half of the book was faster-paced than the first, since I found the first few chapters to be a bit of a drag. However, the author made certain that this fact did not ruin the plot.

I give this book a 3 out of 4 stars rating. The book has outstanding character development, and it's interesting to learn more about each character as the story unfolds. Each character's traits were projected in such a way that I adored even the villains. Trenton, with his obvious proclamations and foolish judgments, was my personal favorite. You will understand what I am talking about if you read this book and I am sure you will come to like him too. At any point in the story, the ending was unpredictable, and some chapters were complete game-changers.

I highly recommend it to all fantasy enthusiasts as well as those who would enjoy a good joke and a unique reading experience. The chapters were short, with intriguing titles that held the reader's attention. J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison has done an incredible job of taking us on a wild adventure in a short read that was captivating enough to make you want to finish the book in one sitting. The last chapter and the cliffhanger was splendid as well as unexpected and will leave you hoping for a sequel soon.
