United States of opioid crisis by Harry Nelson is a shocking comprehensive read and eye opener that fixates on horror behind opioids addiction. An enormous number of Americans are affected, but most of them are still in darkness. In this book, the author takes the reader through the journey of history from late 19th century. He goes further to where this problem raised during the 1990s when fentanyl and OxyContin became common opioids. There were no satisfactory returns from law enforcers nor healthcare department and the crisis rose.

Overdose has snatched lives of so many, including celebrities like Michael Jackson Whitney Houston, and others just a few in mentioned many and unmentioned hundreds. The book gives records of escalation of spots of opioids over the recent years. An alarm was raised to policy makers to limit opioids use in hospital and issue ban for use at home for people between ages of 18-35 and instead administer other pain medication. He adds moral diminishment causes trauma, depression and anti social behaviors and isolation because of technology leads to opioids abuse.

I like this book so much because Harry Nelson took this crisis to another level with research. He emphasizes on cutting down the number of over dosed cases and dying of hospitalized people, alternative treatment of pain that will not lead to addiction, and treatment and support to those who are already addicted. He goes further to set up seven pillars in public health. O.P.I.O.I.D.S. to stand for Outreach, physician, Innovation, Overdose, Interdiction, Data and strengthening. If only what Americans would follow these pillars in a few years to come the problem would be cut down by big percentage.

I found nothing unlikable in this book. Mr. Harry does a great job opening eyes United States is suffering from this crisis. Its favorable time the policy makers’ advocates and health care join hands and focus on the dilemma. The unbridled selfishness of the corporate forces that keep pushing this drug in to market must be brought to a stop. Stronger law should be enforced to those who are selling it to back markets. The only way is to point them out as Mr. Harry has done in this book.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because the novel is masterfully written. It’s an easy read and with deep information on opioids. It’s a comprehensive approach to a bleeding nation, and it offers viable solutions that can be carried out.

I would recommend it to everyone who is concern to ending drug overdoses related deaths. A must read to a family or individual that has been struck by this crisis directly or indirectly. Health care givers and policy makers too should read this book.
