Review of Speedy hurled through havoc
Reading 'Speedy Hurled through Havoc' is a breath of fresh air for those wanting to step into a shoes of a traveler. It is an honest, beautiful and bittersweet tales of the author, Dave 'Letterfly' Knoderer. His life is anything but constant. From his rough childhood to a life in the circus then to being a traveling artist, it's ever changing. Reading his stories, you can feel his hope, optimism and strength. He grows through each challenges, learning from people he met along the way and never backs out from new opportunities.
I love how this book feels very hopeful. His fascination with the circus, his interest in people and animals, and his carefree outlook on life makes you curious to know more and even root for him. There are many helpful advice and things you can learn from a traveling artist. Although this book is about his life, it sheds light on how influential childhood experiences can affect well into adulthood. How the hurt manifests itself into things such as alcoholism, anxiety and narcissism and how you can choose to overcome it, or to continue the cycle because that is comfortable. He never sugarcoats his thoughts and experiences and writes them as it is. I applaud honest writing in biographies.
One thing I need to point out about the writing is that he tends to repeat his quotes and experiences. There are a few instances in which he repeatedly used the same story in different chapters, with just slightly more details than the previous chapters. Another instance, a quote is repeated three times throughout the whole book. This makes me feel, "didn't I read this a few chapters ago?". Maybe the purpose is to give the current chapter some recap, but personally I feel it is unnecessary and it disrupts the flow of the story. Also, the author uses plenty of circus terms in the beginning and horse training terms without much explanation. Thus it’s hard to imagine some scenes unless you Google it or you have a strong imagination. It is definitely not the later for me.
I rate this book a two out of four stars. This book is an enjoyable read for the first time however it is not enough to re-read it. Flow is important for me when reading and the repeating stories in the book gives me Deja Vu and not the good kind.
Otherwise it is a very delightful read. Anybody who wants to escape the city life for a while would definitely enjoy this book. I recommend this book for those who wants to experience life through another person’s lens. This book is light, honest and relatable. You might even find yourself becoming part of the pages.
