Review of Last Words from Above
[Following is a volunteer review of "Last Words from Above" by Jeremy Brown.]
Last Words From Above by Jeremy Brown are a series of inspirational quotes, which he believes are divinely inspired by listening to God in the dark of the night. This led him to write this book of over a thousand quotes and life advice. He receives his inspiration by sitting at 3 am in the morning to listen to the inspiration come down to him. This inspiration takes the form of advice, words of wisdom and inspirational quotes concerning how to live in society, find our life purpose, deal and get on with others, friendship, love, compassion, and how to avoid satan and become closer to God. The quotes are numbered and reach almost two thousand. They take up almost 190 pages and are often addressed to the reader in the second and sometimes third person. He believes that this may be the last of this type of book.
What was enjoyable about the book was that its organisation helped the reader to distinguish quotes from each other. The fact that each statement was numbered separated it from those before and after it. This meant that if someone wanted to use a quote, write it down, memorise it or use it in some way it would be easier. Possibly due to using these numbered quotes there were no chapters.
I found the quotes themselves truly inspiring, and some of them really did influence me to think about my self and my life and how to deal with people. I especially liked the quotes that concerned the ego, dealing with money and keeping satan away. I think in our society and our modern age such advice is needed for us to get in touch with ourselves and develop a better way of living.
The fact that the writer experienced these inspirations while just listening and sitting at 3 am was itself an inspiration for me. I have since thought about the benefits of such an exercise to receive similar inspiration and words of wisdom in my own life.
The book was very spiritual, and it did tend to lean towards a Christian perspective or understanding of things. Most of the quotes had a spiritual lean and many referred to God, Satan, and some to Jesus or other Christian beliefs. However, I think that any religion could benefit from most of the quotes and many of them are general enough to suit readers of different beliefs and backgrounds. Due to its religious theme and high standards of morality, there was no erotica or profanity in the book.
The main negative issue was, however, the editing. I came across ten grammatical or spelling errors that demonstrated that the book was not professionally edited or read through properly. For this reason I feel I will have to reduce a star. I also thought that the author could have separated the quotes into chapters and organised them according to themes. However, this was a personal preference and does not de-value the choice of the writer.
Due to the lack of editing, I am reducing a star. Therefore, I am rating the book 3 out of 4 stars.
I think readers who are looking for spirituality and inspiration in their lives would enjoy the book. People who are feeling low and need a pick up could benefit from the positive advice. It would also suit people interested in non-fiction, Christian inspiration and spiritual writings.
Although I think that most readers of any faith and none could benefit from the book, atheists who don't like mention of religion or other faiths that may not like mention of Christ or other Christian things may not enjoy some parts of the book.
