Hattie Vavaseur, written by M. Rebecca Wildsmith, tells the perplexing story of an elderly woman with memory loss who is tossed headfirst into the mystic unknown. Through the help of old friends and new ones, Hattie is slowly unraveling her mysterious past. Unbeknownst to Hattie, by bringing back her memories, she will finally know the truth about her long-lost love. Creeping along in the shadows of Hattie’s past lies the truth and one’s malicious intent.

One positive aspect of this book is the different take on ghosts and what they are able to do. The dead characters are able to touch animals, people, objects, and ride in vehicles. The only time that the ghosts are not able to touch people is when they mean to cause harm. This is different from the usual abilities of ghosts in many stories. Another positive aspect is that there is a lot going on throughout the story to keep the readers' attention including ghosts, murder, romance, and magic.

Unfortunately, the negatives far outweigh the positives for this book. First, the main character is horrid. She’s the book equivalent of a modern-day ‘Karen’; but worse. Sadly, all the other characters are infuriating. The insane medium Vamelda, is so irritating. Everything she said was a random, jumbled mess in a wild attempt to build unwanted and unneeded suspense. The antagonist, Lydia, is confusing because she will stop at nothing to obtain Reginald, the incredibly boring and verbally abusive man. Lydia’s obsession with Reginald is mind-boggling and makes no sense. The nephew of Hattie is an absolute buffoon and offered no real help to the story. The storyline itself is a chaotic mess of unwanted information to make the story, painstakingly, longer. Additionally, the writing style is meant to show the old-fashioned language, which in itself can draw attention away from the story. Also, the chapters are cutting up run-on scenes, which is incredibly vexing and unnecessary. This book was incredibly difficult to get through and even harder to find positive aspects for.

I rate this book 1 out of 4 stars. I give this rating because I find this book extremely difficult to read and the characters vapid. Although there is much going on within the book; it remains unstimulating.

I would not recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fast-paced murder mysteries or paranormal romance. This book is not a page-turning thriller but instead, it is incredibly slow-paced with frustrating characters.
