[Following is a volunteer review of "The United States of Opioids" by Harry Nelson.]
The United States of Opioids is a call to action
with tangible steps that we can all take. Harry delivers insights into the challenges facing our health system doctors, hospitals, and addiction treatment providers and also offers steps that we can all take as parents and with everyone else in our lives.
Knowing that celebrates also suffer from opioids is an indication that it doesn't matter the level of Fame or wealth anyone can have, opioids will find its way into your existence if you are not careful. What led to Michael Jackson's death was more of trying to render help to a celebrity under false pretense of not using his real identity thereby refusing to give a proper documentation of how these drugs were made available to him.
Harry gave this information about a doctor who was involved in drugs prescription for Michael Jackson; I tried to reassure this doctor that it wouldn’t be the end of the world; no matter what mistakes he had made, there was still a chance to express remorse, demonstrate self-awareness, and establish that he took compliance seriously. I told the doctor that I’d been down this path many times, and that he needed to take a deep breath and not panic. After nearly an hour on the phone, he seemed calmer and made an appointment to come into the office the next afternoon. He didn’t show up for our appointment. I had a feeling something was wrong. Sure enough, I got the news a few days later: he had been found dead after having taken a lethal dose of opioids, ending his own life.
Through Harry's illustrations, I realize that many who became addicted to these opioids were not necessarily people who really wanted it but rather were introduced to it by doctors as a medication to help them reduce pains and as a result they became addicted to it while some, their stories are as simple as someone feeling lonely and isolated and self-medicating away the anxiety. Before opioids crisis can be solved, it is imperative that everyone needs to understand it. This talked about the psychological and mental health.
In recent years, lots have been said able different crises ranging from finances, political instability, increase in rate of divorce etc. But I realize little is know about these opioids' crisis ravaging the life of rich and rich, old and young, men and women in the United States. This book delved Into the why? The how? The when? The who? And I realize that every single persons are affected directly or indirectly.
The United States of Opioids provides the answers we need and reasons why opioids are so addictive. The statistics are alarming between 1999 and 2016, over 630,000 people have lost their lives to drug overdose, roughly 350,000 of the death were opioids related. In 2017, 72,000 drug death were recorded, roughly 49,000 were Opioids related, this brings the total to over 700,000 between 1999 and 2007 yet pharmaceutical company are still in the business of producing these drugs? Why are they pushing it to the market for consumption.
The mechanism of death in an opioid overdose is essentially the same as in a heart attack or stroke: oxygenated blood flow is cut off, by suppressed breathing with opioids and by an obstruction in a heart attack or stroke no wonder Opioids related deaths were underreported.
Did Harry provide reasonable and lasting solution to this crisis? How we can all contribute to finding a solution to the opioid crisis? Going through this book I believe you will find out. This book is an eye-opener to one crisis that we hardly talked about. Everyone need to know, I rate this book 4 out of 4, it was professionally edited and each chapter have its own unique information.
The book was enlightening, and I personally learned a lot from it. I strongly recommend this book.
