How to Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy is a compelling book that aims to teach you to be more successful and take charge of your life. The author tries to inspire his readers to better their lives by sharing his personal experience and of others. Not only does the writer share essential gems of wisdom that remind you of the value of being, but also of growing your influence.

I appreciate the writing style used in the book. Non-fiction is not preferred by everyone, understandably. It, mostly, requires so much concentration and time to get in flow with the text. But I think this is where this book wins. This book was so easy to read, not because the text in it does not have the value promised, but because of the literary devices used by the author. McCoy chose to write use dialogue to keep the reader engrossed. I was happily surprised by how much I loved the Q&A used to spread his knowledge (I feel like I have just given away a spoiler).

The book is authentic. You learn, early on, of the troubles that plagued the writer’s life, and you understand his motivation for writing the book. I appreciated his kind words and harsh truth. The authenticity is further seen in the interviewees that he chose to have in the book. As I read the book, the saying, “you are the people keep”, rang in my head several times. The writer has found ways to layer different messages so that the reader can see them. I loved that he projected his audience as intelligent and determined.

I have a lot of praises for this book, but I want you to be as happily surprised and intrigued by the text as I was. How to Be Successful has some religious tones, but not enough to be alarming or preachy. A couple of the interviewees are Christians and willingly share this. However, the presence of a variety of interviewees allows you to pick whose advice best suits you.

I give this book 4 stars out of 4. The book was exceptionally and a fantastic read with actionable advice and a concise message. This non-fiction is suited for anyone who wants to change their life, grow, and believe that they can resolve their problems. I recommend this book because it offers a variety of actionable advice to the reader.
