This book starts out with a bang, as we are introduced to a colorful cast of characters. We are taken to a small town in Utah where Hailey reluctantly goes to work for the local newspaper. She needs the job so she can finish her degree and have the experience she needs to start her career. On her way to visit the Broken Inn project out of town, she witnesses a murder from a distance. Unsure on what to do or who she can trust to talk to, we are taken on a desert adventure to solve the murder. There is also a mysterious project tied with the Broken Inn and a man who mysteriously seems to arrive right when she needs help.

I really enjoyed this story. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time trying to solve the mystery, which happens to be more than just a murder. The setting is fantastic and I felt like I was right there with Hailey, Relic, and Ash. Broken Inn by A. W. Baldwin was really a fun surprise as I had no idea what to expect. I thought all of the characters were unique and I think that is really important, especially as someone who reads a lot of fiction. The dog also added some fun to the story and Relic made me view life from a different perspective.

While I did enjoy this book, there were some moments that I found to be a bit far fetched. I was puzzled as to how Hailey handles the situation she finds herself in. Witnessing a murder didn’t seem to faze her much. With this being small town America I was surprised that people didn’t realize what was happening at Broken Inn sooner than they did. It took an outsider snooping around to get people to start asking questions.

All of that to say, this is a fun murder mystery with a great setting. I am looking forward to reading more by A. W. Baldwin. I would give this book a 3 out of 4 stars rating.

I think a wide audience would love this book. It is a pretty fast read and it keeps you interested until the end. I really didn’t want to put the book down since the story keeps you guessing until the end. Those that like general fiction and also mysteries would enjoy this book.
