[Following is a volunteer review of "The Fisherman and his Foundlings" by Phillip Leighton-Daly.]
Once there lived a fisherman whose heart was as large as the ocean. His heart brimmed with treasures like kindness and compassion for the less fortunate. He lived along a coastline in a home built with the remains of ship wreckage. He and his wife did charitable work at the leper colony. Unfortunately, the fisherman’s wife died, but his kindness for the destitute people didn’t. Every morning he went fishing because the lepers needed the oil from the salmon to get some relief from their disease. Transporting the fish from his home to the colony was an adventurous feat on its own. But the fisherman knew how much his visit meant to the people and the orphans from the leper colony. That is why he didn’t mind the troubles he faced in his trek.
The fisherman continued to serve in the leper colony and those who were wrecked either by the storms or ill fate. But goodness always comes with a price. In the same sea where the fisherman fished, there lived the merfolk who hated humans. The merfolk queen saw kindness as not a virtue but as a vice. She decided that the good fisherman was her nemesis. To destroy him, she used a merchild as bait. What was the merfolk queen’s plan? Will the fisherman’s kindness save him or destroy him? Read The Fisherman and his Foundlings by Phillip Leighton-Daly to see how this story turns out.
I like that this book’s core aim is to teach children about the importance of kindness in this world. With quips related to sea-life, this book has educative value along with entertainment value. The joy of orphan kids when the fisherman arrives brings tears to the reader’s eyes. The fisherman is undoubtedly the superhero of kindness. Along with Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man, we need a superhero who inspires the world to be a little more kind towards others. By picking the topic of leprosy, this book also sheds light on the sufferings of the diseased.
I will rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I did not find any reason to give this book less than a perfect score. There were no errors, and there were no profanities or sexual content either. This book is professionally edited and is suitable for young minds. Death and disease are a main part of the book but, they come in the story as a natural part of the life cycle.
What makes this book even more fun for kids is its illustrations by JRaphael Edmundo Honasan. The story and illustrations bring out the best in each other. The vocabulary difficulty level is quite high with words such as treacherous, precipitous, etc. So, adult supervision might be necessary if you are selecting this book for kids below the age of seven. I will gladly recommend this book to pre-teenagers. This book is a different type of superhero story with its kind message and illustrations. If your child loves the sea, fantasy, and illustrations then, consider this book a jackpot.
