[Following is a volunteer review of "Solaris Seethes (Solaris Saga book 1)" by Janet McNulty.]
Where to start? I started reading this book, as I am a great fan of sci- fi, adventure and fantasy books. This book, the first of a series of books, was a bit difficult for me to get into. It was hard to follow the alien culture of Rynah and her planet of Lanyr as they are very much human. So I would have liked it to be much more different and exotic. Here you can really tap into your imagination and make an alien race that could be epic, but instead this was ordinary.
The story felt rushed as the Author did not take time to go into depth to capture my (the reader) interest. The only reason I continued reading, is because it was required. However, as the story continued, I felt the need to see where it was going.
I did like the traveling to different planets, and the action scenes. For these, for me, we properly written in depth. As I sit here writing this review, I try to think of any grammar and spelling mistakes, but could not find fault with this. The author only allowed me to connect with one character (Brie), as she only went in depth with her character, and created the bond, which I believe should be created with all characters and situations in the storyline. I suppose it was so that one could feel the sadness of the loss of this one character.
It amazed me how quick each hero in the story adapted to space, and their different surroundings. There was absolutely no emotion in the telling of this story. Their was no connection or even interacting with the characters, where one could get to know them better. This author's writing mostly annoyed me more than enthralled me which is a pity, as I believe that this story has got so much potential. It did not grow or evolve as the ending drew near, and I fear that not even the cliffhanger in the first book would make me look for the second book.
I rate this book 2 out of 4.
