Final Report by Jeff Shear is a thrilling case, at times a sort of whodunnit, about the making of a fourth-generation nuclear bomb and what the consequences of that could mean for an already broken America and the rest of the world. Solved by our troubled protagonist – Jackson Guild, a spy who is working undercover to try to stop the unthinkable happening. However, obstacles such as romance, lies, and his constant search for the truth in what seems like a never-ending mystery get in Jackson’s way.

This aptly named book never failed to keep me guessing, with constant twists and turns in plot I was more than intrigued to keep reading. They say a book should capture your attention in ten words or less and this author did that perfectly, within the first sentence I knew I was hooked. The development of character throughout the story would be my top positive point. Jeff Shear creates nuanced, complicated people that can be related to even if you never really knew anything about nuclear weapons or politics! All the character’s you meet in Final Report have depth and motives and do not meet the reader with meaningless physical descriptors, but with clues about who they might be and what this may mean to the protagonist, and in this way, you learn so much more about them. As a reader I find this invaluable! You can expect the unexpected with this story, the reader will gather information as Jackson Guild does, and watch him fall in love as a most forbidden romance unfolds!

However, I must say as I am not the greatest fan of this genre, I did at times find the book hard to read. This is not a story that you necessarily read to relax, and I found if I did not concentrate, I did not always grasp exactly what was going on, especially through some longer expositional sections. This is why I have given the book 2 out of 4 stars , along with some grammatical and spelling errors which reflect badly on the editing.

I would recommend this book to avid readers of political thrillers and mysteries. If you enjoy complicated plots about science and war and politics, with questionable characters and a plot that is impossible to guess then this book is for you. With less than 150 pages this book is just a snapshot of the secret lives of government officials within this post-nuclear America.
