Samantha (Sam) Paige is a strong, independent Professional Nurse working as Critical Care Co-ordinator at Metropolitan General Hospital. After her career takes an unexpected direction, she makes a life-altering decision to leave her home and go and stay on her Uncle’s farm outside Franklin, Tennessee. There she meets a young, handsome Civil War Historian, TJ Carter. Land developers are trying to buy up large sections of land on which historical battles took place. TJ and his local historical society, with some help from his lawyer friend, Alex, are trying to prevent this from happening. This is bringing them into conflict with the developers. Samantha’s Uncle’s farm is amongst the farms the developers want to buy. Samantha and TJ soon find themselves embroiled in a dangerous adventure as they themselves do battle with the ruthless land developers.

A positive aspect of Hallowed Ground is the author, Cindy Ziperman’s enjoyable descriptions of her scenes and characters. Due to her impactful words, it was easy for me to picture the scenes of her story playing out like a movie in my mind’s eye. The story is quite fast paced and there are 2 unexpected twists towards the end, which are quite skilfully presented and draw the adventure to a satisfying close.

However, I did feel that some of Ziperman’s characters are a bit stereotypical. Examples are the two brothers, Delbert and Ray and even Samantha’s surgeon boyfriend, Geoff. They act in a totally predictable way, but perhaps their actions and presence in the story allows a comparison to be made to those admirable qualities displayed by the hero, TJ. The brothers, in particular, bring some humour to the story. Taking this observation on characters appearing stereotypical a little further, it could be argued that the whole story is a little predictable. Even Samantha’s ambivalence to getting involved with TJ, is resolved a little too quickly and neatly, but then the book is not that long and so there is no time to explore this theme more fully. Nevertheless, the book is entertaining.

I picked up a few spelling and grammatical errors in the book, but on the whole, the book was well edited. There is some profanity in the book and a few descriptive love scenes, which do not really add value to the story. Overall, I found the book entertaining and enjoyable and so I therefore rate it 3 out of 4 stars.

Ziperman has brought two unusual subjects together in this book: namely, nursing/medicine and civil war history. She has also woven adventure and danger into the mix. Given this original combination, I would recommend this book to readers who have knowledge of and/or an interest in nursing/medicine, history in general (not just American civil war or battlefield history) and those who enjoy adventure/action stories and even those who enjoy stories about legal or business issues.
