In the book “Speedy hurled through havoc” by Dave Letterfly Knoderer, the author writes about his own life which was intensely influenced by his selfish, ambitious, talented father and his older brother who was brilliant, but had a disability to adjust to the needs of those around him. This placed an extra burden on the family life of the author. Although the lack of love and recognition by his father and the fact that he felt ashamed by the behaviour of his brother emerged right through the book, he was never bitter or depressed.
To understand his own love for the circus, he tells the story of how his father and a friend, when they were young, witnessed the arrival of the circus in their hometown by train. Through the lively description and in context use of captures of the circus artists, Knoderer puts the reader right into experiencing the spectacular show and accompanying activities. The two boys stayed to watch the dismantling of and loading even though the evening show was still on. Everything not needed any more was packed and moved onto the waiting train. The next day found only traces of activity on the terrain where the whole drama took place the previous night. This experience had a big bonding effect on the two boys. They were inspired to produce an even bigger show, in their own minds, in their backyard. Because of the wonderful stories his father could tell about his connection with the circus, and because he so dearly wanted to be shown affection by his father, the author did not ever want to do anything that did not reflect positively on his father’s life.
In this book every activity is described in a very informative way so that the reader feels that he is experiencing it himself. In each event the author uses the positive to encourage himself to achieve more and do better. Apart from all the knowledge the reader gets from in detail description of, amongst other things, photography, there is a number of very valuable life lessons subtly woven through the incidents. The author often flashes back into the past, telling interesting facts about people, occupations and how things were done in the past.
I found this book captivating, encouraging and uplifting. Despite a number of serious problems in the life of Dave Letterfly Knoderer, he manages to overcome them and achieve his goals. I would recommend this book to readers young and old, because all of us can relate to one or another of Knoderer’s problems and to those of us who are older, the descriptions bring back memories of times gone by.
“Speedy hurled through Havoc” by Dave Letterfly Knoderer is professionally edited and a very good read that lingers long after you have read the last page. If I had to mention something negative, I would say that the beginning was a bit slow and one could easily have put the book down and thus missed out on a precious reading experience.
I rate the book: “Speedy hurled through Havoc” by Dave Letterfly Knoderer 4 out of 4 stars.
