A Long Dark Rainbow, a novel by Michael Tappenden, is a romance novel that presents the story of two interesting characters, Alex James and Samantha Reagan. Alexander James is a retired man who had a successful career as an art historian. He lives alone in an unfashionable and a modest flat. He wants to forget his past but during the night he is reminded of all the memories. He meets Samantha Reagan by chance at a charity shop where she is a volunteer. She is a sophisticated and a divorced woman, pretending she is happy with the people around her, but deeply she knows she feels lonely. Alex and Sam had met memorably before, but even now, forty years on, there is definitely still a spark.

I love this book a lot because you can understand everything in detail, since it begins and is followed by a slow pace of events. The poetic style of writing of Tappenden takes the reader into the world of the characters’ feelings and discovers the characters’ thoughts. The story describes erotic scenes which makes it very intriguing for readers, because it not only shows us how do characters feel, but also how do they act. Readers will also get to learn a lot from deep conversations. Alex and Samantha have lived their whole life away from each other, and this makes them talk a lot about their past experiences and reveal their secrets. A date after 40 years, is really intriguing and breathtaking.

One thing that I would like to add in this book is probably the ending. I think there could have been one more paragraph about how the relationship between Alex and Samantha would proceed so the readers would be clearer.

Going through this book, I really had a lot of questions in mind, guessing what might happen next, and if they would be with each other in the end or not. It is quite intriguing and it grabs your attention all over the time of reading. Michael Tappenden created such a story that kept me enthusiastic and eager until the end. I honestly believe that this book deserves the maximum rating of 4 out of 4.

I would highly recommend this book to all the readers who love romance and erotic novels, vintage souls who love to go deep into the people’s minds and want to discover more from them. The story is fascinating and definitely makes you wonder what is going to happen next as you turn a page. Since there are many erotic scenes described, I think that it is not suitable for younger audiences.
