[Following is a volunteer review of "Awakening" by Tayma Tameem.]
Awakening, by Tayma Tameem, is a fantasy magic novel. Awakening follows the story of two princesses, Princess Amara and Katja. Princess Amara is born blessed with the powers of Brikkir and is destined for greatness. The book jumps from present time to various times in the past. Princess Amara must learn to control her powers and not let her emotions control her. Princess Katja is Princess Amara’s protector and the only one who can keep her calm. The present time story follows Princess Katja who has lost her memory and must rediscover who she is. Those she meets on her journey reveal more information about her past and she has to decide what she needs to do. But is everything as it seems and is betrayal closer than one would think?
This is the third novel I have read by Tayma Tameem, twists in the story are now something I expect and could also predict were going to occur. I cannot disclose the twists as it would spoil the story, but I still enjoyed them and found the main plot twist was well written. The chapters are well labelled and make it easy to follow where in the timeline the reader is. I enjoyed the overarching plot of this novel; it was intriguing and fresh in its ideas. However overall, I felt it lacked completion, some information felt unnecessary and boring and left me feeling like I just wanted to skip to chapters of interest. Majority of the characters in this novel were enjoyable to read about. The steady character development as more details were unveiled made for enjoyable reading and a growing fondness for certain characters.
Whilst I normally have no issue with flicking between timelines in a story it did not seem to flow as effortlessly in this novel. I found I was wanting more details in certain chapters and found myself not enjoying certain chapters as they felt like unimportant space fillers. I also disliked the last plot twist where a new villain is introduced. It felt very sudden, and I believe it would have been beneficial for the author to extend the novel slightly to expand on the new character development. I also did not like how this novel ended. It felt very sudden and didn’t really leave me intrigued to read the next novel in this series.
I would rate this novel a 3 out of 4 stars, I cannot give it a full 4 stars as there are errors and this novel would have benefitted from slightly more depth. If I could, I would give it a 2.5 out of 4 as I do believe the lack of depth, late introduction of the villain and the way the changing from past to present sometimes felt like unimportant fillers.
I would recommend this novel for young adults who enjoy magic fantasy novels. I would not recommend it for young teens as it does include some rather graphic descriptions of violence.
