Xandon and the King’s scepter is filled with adventure and thrill, I enjoyed embarking on the adventures with Xandon. It seems that everywhere Xandon goes trouble seems to find him. I really went through the highs and lows that Xandon experienced with him. I laughed aloud a few times to the witty comments of certain characters. Xandon has to deal with awful people throughout his whole life – the McQuibbles, Hodge and Val haruk, being bullied and seen as a nothing. He does eventually make some friends who prove to be true and faithful in the end. The choices Xandon has to make depicts truth in our own lives. Certain choices have certain consequences. Xandon is a bright boy with a future that holds many decisions. He faces decisions about friendship, bravery, reverberations and personal growth. Choices he makes show what he values in his life and what is important to him.

The life Xandon was thrown into was definitely not fair and you feel sorry for him, he seems to draw the short stick in most situations, but he gets through it and comes out stronger. Even though this is just fiction, it definitely reminds me of things that happen in the real world and that there are certain situations that are quite similar. Reading about this boy who is in fact actually so strong emotionally, helps to know you can be too in your own life.

Xandon and the King’s scepter is a well-written book with a broad range of vocabulary. After a few chapters, I simply could not put the book down; I just had to read what happens next. I enjoyed the fact that there is a map you can look at to see the seven kingdoms of the Magistrate.

I felt Tyson vonn Beck used too many obscure names for characters and places; it was not easy to follow in the beginning but you get used to it as you delve further into the story. This book has a sequel and I am definitely intrigued enough to want to read it.

It is a typical ‘boy is in peril, finds things out about his past that changes his future’, story but overall, it was good. I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars as there were some grammatical errors found.

This is a great book for anyone seeking to fulfil their days with a bold experience of ‘travelling’ to a new world. Definitely for someone who enjoys fiction with magic, knights and obscure animals.
