[Following is a volunteer review of "Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide" by William H. Coles.]
The potential to bring forth a good literary fiction story lies in the author's knowledge of how to establish it. Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writers Guide by William H. Cole explains the meaning of a literary fiction story. The author cites that, although a literary fiction story is imagined, a real happening can stimulate the imagination and form the base of the story. He widely talks about structure, theme, characterization, and many others. He notes down some of the errors made today while writing fictional articles. Furthermore, he educates writers on how to write to captivate the reader.
I selected this book to further understand literary fiction stories since this is my favourite genre. The exhilarating aspect of this book is not only the information being brought forth but also the methods of writing used. The author asks probable questions and explanations them. This aspect is very enlightening to many readers. The author also uses the story of Little Red Riding Hood. He phrases it in different ways discussing the aspects that made the story to be fascinating for over 150 years. The author urges the writers of literary fiction to write selflessly to entertain the reader. This formulates fictional stories that stay popular among future generations.
The book offers a summary at the end of each chapter that provides a recap of the information provided in the chapter. The author gives the meaning of some of the words used in the chapter so that the writers do not confuse phrases or use them interchangeably. William H. Coles also points out if the word being described is a noun, verb, or adjective. The author notes that characters are created and imagined not discovered and described. I only found one negative aspect in the book. The author uses a different subtitle within the pages that is different from the one on the cover. The author should have used the same subtitle as the one used on the book cover so as not to confuse the reader. I also think the subtitle used in the book will be more appropriate than the one used on the book cover.
I rate Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writers Guide 4 out of 4 stars. I did not locate any grammatical error in this book and I confirm that the book was professionally edited. The image used in the book is also very sensational and this creates curiosity in the reader. The publication is also divided into two books. The first book talks about the literary story in fiction while the second book talks about creating the literary fiction story.
I recommend this book to writers of fiction stories. Those writers already in this field will find it useful in improving their work and those aspiring to write such stories will find it useful in producing an outstanding piece of work. This book is also useful to reviewers who need to understand the basis of recommending good novels on literary fiction.
