Review of The Price of Dreams
The Price of Dreams is a riveting account of passion and reinvention. Through the main character, Jerry A. Greenberg makes a compelling examination of the joys, sacrifices, and losses that accompany ambition. John's obsessive compulsion to paint renders him indifferent to the conventional pleasures of life. Still, when Amy walks into his life, John is determined to embrace domesticity. His newfound responsibility, as a husband and a father, challenge his long-held ideals around human relations. Through John's experiences, The Price of Dreams explores the non-linear trajectory of life. It adeptly reinforces the necessity of balance in the quest for success.
Notably, the author utilizes a rich range of vocabulary. This makes it easy for the reader to trace the novel's plot. As another positive addition, the narrative is littered with funny anecdotes which enhance the appeal of the events and dialogue. For instance, when asked about the source of his marital woes, John contends that Amy - his wife - had chosen the cats over him. The fast-paced, free-flowing nature of the narrative also makes for an engaging read. Essentially, the reader is saved the monotony of protracted descriptions. Greenberg is further able to shrewdly integrate the realities of different periods of time within the extended timeline of the story. This makes the book relatable.
Nonetheless, the novel is marred by bland repetitions which compromise the flow of the narrative. This problem is further compounded by the misplacement of tenses. In some cases, the book applies the present tense for events that transpired in the past. This hinders the overall comprehension of the text. Again, while the fast-paced nature of the book inspires greater concentration, it creates a fragmented story with lapses in details. For instance, the reader may not be able to fully appreciate the role of the speaker's children despite the fact that they were periodically mentioned in the text. They are underdeveloped as the entire focus of the narrative is on the speaker. There is also misplacement of punctuation marks which corrupts the intended message.
This book warrants a score of 2 out of 4. While it has a rich plot with colorful characters, there is a need to develop its grammatical efficacy. Admirably, the thematic flow is sustained throughout the novel, with the primary character detailing the various challenges he has had to overcome in pursuing his ambitions. This gives credence to the title of the novel. Polishing the appropriateness of the literary devices and grammatical contexts will serve to ensure the book appeals to a wider readership base.
Overall, this book would be appropriate for individuals who are driven by the desire to achieve their ambitions. Mostly, young adults will find it relevant as it details the various socioeconomic impediments that they will have to surmount in the quest for a better life. It offers a realistic view of the balance needed to achieve optimal happiness in daily interactions between individuals and their environments.
